Best of 2021! – Rae Marshall Photography
The year is 2 0 2 1, otherwise known as the year after the world break down of 2020. Things were definitely still rebuilding in 2021, especially for those of us living in Hawaii and still dealing with restrictions, guest limitations and lock downs on events (weddings) that were without ability to plan around. We finally have reached opening at the later half of the year and the wedding industry couldn’t be more excited for all the weddings we were able to complete and couples that we could celebrate this year.
The summer tourist surge:
There was a tourist surge of the decade for the summer of 2021 in Hawaii, with everyone who was tired of being cooped up deciding to say aloha. (don’t touch the turtles or monk seals for Fs SAKE)
These two months almost took me OUT, because I was actually dealing with first trimester sickness while booking up double my usual sessions, and then had a toddler getting thrown out of daycare for something like a runny nose (still COVID era rules). Oh yeah my husband also peaced out (just military things) during this time.
Enter two hero moms, my mom and my husband’s mom who are literal angels, and they cuddled on Oliver while this photographer tried to keep up. Moms are really the best.
Time to tell you: our last full year
This is our last full year in Hawaii (for now?). We will be moving sometime in summer 2022 due to military life, and can’t believe how lucky we have been to be able to be island people for 5 whole years. It’s been bittersweet realizing that we have been given such an amazing wonderful time here, but also that it must come to an end. I will be announcing more about the move next year, and will be booking up sessions until middle of May, with associate photographers available into June.
I don’t know yet how to process leaving the island, and I still have time left so I’m not ready to go down that road. But every moment here is special, and looking back on the photos from here that I took or that are my own are a reminder of the magic of the island for the rest of my life.
I’m so excited that our second baby will also be born in Hawaii, and my two little ones will get to share a birthplace so special together.
Family Happenings: Jenna got engaged in Hawaii! Marissa is also pregnant and we can’t wait for her little one!
My favorite Song: “Taro” Alt-J, “Flamboyant” Dorian Electra, “Heat Waves” Glass Animals, “Willow” Taylor Swift
Favorite TV Show: Wanda Vision, Loki (marvel geek here)
Places I flew: Maui, Hilo, home to Alabama
Big Events this year: found out we were pregnant with baby 2, arriving early 2022!
Biggest Lesson Learned: Everything is about having a balance
Number of Photoshoots I’ve done this year: 187
NOTE: If I didn’t include an image from your session it’s likely I just was too confused in my hard drives and staring at photos for too long and then a program crashed after picking images and then I just didn’t know where I was anymore.
These are more of an overview of the year, but I definitely had favorites from every session and every person I photographed!
The BLUE series
About a little guy
That lives in a blue world
And all day and all night
And everything he sees is just blue
Like him inside and outside
With a blue little window
And a blue corvette
And everything is blue for him
And himself and everybody around
Cause he ain’t got nobody to listen to
