VIDEO: Day Trip to Kaua’i!
Rae Marshall – Kauai Wedding Photographer
Aloha, I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! It was pretty strange for me that Thanksgiving just happened when I’m still wearing short sleeves and shorts. Actually this past week was the first since I’ve been here (starting in June) where I even thought about wearing pants or closed toed shoes. Hawaii’s weather really is warm, but it’s starting to rain a lot more in the winter season.
Wait, this blog post isn’t about the weather?! It’s about my recent Kaua’i trip!
Many of my friends on the mainland don’t know much about the Hawaiian Islands. They aren’t totally sure where Honolulu is and if I’m on Maui or Oahu, or what Kaua’i even is, so I wanted to talk a bit about that so you can understand where I’m traveling to!
Hawaiian Islands Lesson for Beginners
There are 8 Hawaiian Islands. Oahu is the most populated island, and where the city of Honolulu is located. I live just outside of Honolulu. Maui is the second most tourist friendly island.
- Flights from island to island usually cost around $150 and are 30 minute flights. You could easily travel to Oahu and island hop to one or more of the other islands while on vacation!
The Other Islands: the Big Island (actually called Hawai’i), Kaua’i, Lana’i and Moloka’i. I’m not mentioning the last 2 because they are privately owned.
Each island has its own characteristics, destination spots and history, so it’s a big deal to be able to travel to each of them and see what makes them unique. I have now been to all of the visitable islands except for Moloka’i, which I will definitely do in time. I hope to be able to talk about the other islands in the future (I loved Lana’i!)
The Special Island of Kaua’i!
So what makes Kaua’i special? This island is a true gem and many people’s favorite island to visit. While Oahu’s population is around 1 million, Kaua’i has a population of about 60,000. Oahu has a lot of big city life, especially in the Waikiki area, which many tourists are surprised by.
Kaua’i is more small town, which a lot of first time tourists don’t realize. It has one main road that goes around the entire side of the island, so it takes a long time to get from point A to point B. The landscapes are breathtaking and contains the famous Na Pali Coast, which can be best seen by taking a boat tour or by helicopter.
Quick Facts: There are chickens everywhere on the islands, but it seems even more so in Kaua’i. Their Mexican food is much better than on Oahu!
- I’ve been to Kaua’i 3 times now for photo sessions, and this is the first trip I decided to vlog my day. Here you can see a little more of the island gem, a little of my photo session that evening, and what a day in Hawaii looks like! I hope to be able to do bigger activities on each island soon when I don’t have a photo session and a plane to catch at the end of the day, but for now these are such fun adventures.
I hope you enjoy and are able to visit soon!
